Access to Protection and Safety without Discrimination

WORLD DAY AGAINST RACISM In the covid era

Sunday, 21 March 2021

The World Day against Racism (International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination), on Sunday, 21st of March, the Greek Forum of Migrants, for a 7th year in a row, is calling for all groups that are currently being discriminated and affected by racism to raise their voices and to declare their determination to fight all kinds of racism and humiliation of human dignity.

Our lives are now marked by the covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. And they are worse marked, every day, by the increasing discrimination against all vulnerable social groups. The period of the pandemic highlighted the already existing discrimination against vulnerable groups and at the same time deepened it.

A ray of light in this dark times is the indiscriminate support, by means of solidarity, to any person who lacks the basics, who needs a plate of food, a roof, up to the most valuable nowadays but also necessary medical help.

This year, again, we are not marching but we support and send a strong message that today, as never before, non-discriminatory access to protection and safety is non-negotiable

We unite our voices with communities, bodies, NGO and representatives from wider groups affected by discrimination and racism (PWD, LGBTQI, Roma, migrants, refugees, HIV positive, elderly, drug addicts, people with mental illness, prisoners, Religion minorities, etc.)

Together, we send a message of support through social media and urge all people to seek non-discriminatory support and action in vulnerable groups in their community, in their neighborhoods and to support in any way possible the precious hotbeds of solidarity in Greece.

The closure of the WAD 2020 will happen, as every year, with the Award Ceremony of Antiracism – Tzanetos Antypas award to an organization or a person for its contribution to the dealing with the issues of anti-racism and human rights. This year, the Organizing Committee of the WAD2020 decided to pass the award from the Union of Press Photographers Greece - EFE , that was awarded last year, to more than one relevant actions from Athens, Thessaloniki, etc. like Allos Anthropos, Khora, Oikopolis, Annapurna, , and many more.

It is a movement of symbolic character and support to all those ventures that endure, in adverse conditions, in order to support their work daily, vulnerable social groups, which are affected and endangered more than ever in the midst of a pandemic. Our message, however, is to urge the broader support of every group, body, organization and action that actively promotes solidarity with the most marginalized and at-risk groups, thus making a decisive contribution against discrimination and racist violence, in defense of human rights, even at the risk of their lives.

 * The award was established in 2017 in the memory of the activist and founder of PRAKSIS organization, Tzanetos Antypas, where each year an organization or a person working on issues of anti-racism and human rights is awarded.
